The Research Nugget should be based on a current research project and should highlight how computing and/or information technology is being utilized enhance and further your research.

 Multiple nugget submissions are permitted.

We strongly encourage you to use this template  for your slide.  Slides will be judged on ease of understanding, professionalism and creativity.

The submitted research nuggets will be posted to the K2I website.

GUIDELINES:

  •  A nugget is ONLY one slide and it must be submitted as a ppt or pptx
  • The title font MUST be at least 28 pt (32 pt is better)
  • You must include the names of the researchers (we assume most of you at least have a faculty adviser and he/she is usually a PI on the main award that funds your work).
  • All nuggets MUST include credit to the sponsor(s) for your research. For a student, this is usually the source that pays your stipend/salary. If this is not clear, ask your adviser as he/she should know. If you are still not sure, please contact us and we can help navigate this. Remember, you should not only include the grants that pay your salary but also any other grants that fund the infrastructure you depend on (shared computing or SEA equipment).  For example if you use the DAVinCI cluster you need to credit NSF OCI-0959097. For the proper citation for all the compute clusters see  http://www.rcsg.rice.edu/
  • The two main sections of the slide are where you have more freedom to express yourself. Use this to your advantage and be creative.
  • It is extremely important that you explain what your research is about (why the average person should care, what problem does this solve, etc.  The description should be clear and easy to understand)
  • Having awesome graphics is great but they need to make sense or you need to use a few select words to explain it. If necessary, use arrows and text in the graphics to explain the flow and main concepts.
  • Use the NOTE section of the power point slide to submit a 100-200 work description of your slide and your work, this should be sufficient to explain to most of us what we are seeing and how to explain it.

Remember – It should be possible for someone who doesn’t know specifically about your work to include your slide in a presentation and talk about the work you are doing based on the content of your slide and the notes you include below it. If this is possible, your nugget is a success (and could be worth its weight in gold!). (pun intended)

Submissions are due by October 31, 2013.  Winners will be announced in mid November.

Prizes will be paid through payroll and are subject to the normal payroll deductions.
